Celestron Nexstar 5i Auto-guiding Test

Posted by

Since I have a 5i I might as well see how well I can get it auto-guiding. I have used it with a ASI120MC-S as an auto-guider via the ST-4 port. I feel like I had it auto guiding through the ASCOM driver at one point, but now it doesn’t seem to work. Here are the test results:

Guiding via PHD2 ASCOM

Using the ASCOM driver from and connecting up through PHD2, the mount seems to respond to commands but not really. In other words, if you don’t do anything but have the mount track, the error grows very slowly. Once you hit the “calibrate” command, it seems to move West very slowly, then never back to the East. When North calibration commands are issued the mount seems to drift West again. One thought is that the driver disables tracking, issues a pulse guide command and then re-enables tracking.

It is about 1 planets worth of error. It enables long unattended capture.
